The Rotary Club of Elyria Sunrise was chartered on January 10, 1996 as club # 31221 with Rotary International. This club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Elyria which was originally chartered on April 1, 1918 as the 382nd club of Rotary International. The Elyria Rotary Club agreed to share its membership territory in sponsorship of this new club. The Rotary Club of Elyria Sunrise was chartered with 35 members and as of this writing the membership is at 58. The community based projects that have been sponsored by the club include the Santa House on the square, ongoing work with Little League East on its Rotary Field, the community Balloon Drop at the Apple Festival, support of the Not-to-be- Forgotten-Box during the Christmas Season, a 'Safe Car Seat' Check in conjunction with the Health Department, and various programs at Franklin Elementary School including 'The Dictionary Project'. The International support of the club has been through the District MESA program, the Group Study Exchange Program, and in the past some support of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Fellowship of the club can be seen when the members work together on various service projects, on their fund raiser projects,or when they gather for just the fun of a social get together among themselves and their families. It is said that each Rotary Club around the world has their own personality. The Rotary Club of Elyria Sunrise is always upbeat and looking to expand their Rotary experience both in the community and around the world.
